What happens when a (mostly) “normal” person hires a stylist – part 2
In the previous post, I started to tell you about my first encounter with the wonderful Anna. Anna is a personal stylist with a great perception, ability to “read” your personality straight away and an amazing sense of style. I think these are the most important qualities in a personal stylist: to “feel” you right off the bat, to not just have the ability to explain what compliments your proportions, but to also know what would suit your character as well.
During the second part of our “styling adventure” we focused on making some exciting combinations that would work for different occasions.
Same dress - day and night look
I’ve had this silk dress for ages, but always had some difficulties coming up with an exciting combination. This is some of Anna’s suggestions for a day and night outfits. I love the idea of combining rough chunky sweater with the softness of the silk dress.
One pair of trousers - five looks
I rarely wear trousers so needless to say this was one of the items I’ve struggled with most. I asked Anna, the personal stylist, to show me some different ways of putting an outfit together with these trousers. Some of the combinations were really unexpected: like paring a silver sweater with a gold necklace. I thought it was “not done” but the warm tint of the gold really worked better for my complexion than the silver. (The second photo from the left).
Print on print & dress on dress
I really love this 70’s vintage dress. It was fun to see the combinations Anna created for this dress. The dress on it’s own is very busy so I would never think of combining another print with it (the scarf on the right photo), but somehow it works. Anna also showed me how I can layer dress on dress to create an unexpected combo. This was totally new to me. These two looks have definitely made me see my wardrobe differently and want to experiment even more.
Sparkly jacket - do you dare?
I actually LOVE this little sparkly jacket I got at a clothes swap, though I wasn’t sure how I could wear it and not look like a village idiot. With all my good intentions… I just wasn’t sure. I love the first two outfits (on the left) that Anna has put together. I have worn them both already: the outfit on the left to a business meeting (yes, really) and the middle outfit to a hip-hop party. Both were a hit.
The combo with the jacket and 70’s dress… I’m not so sure about it… It might be too much even for me. Turns out there is such a thing 😉
Which one is your favorite look? Would you combine them differently? Let me know and I’ll be sure to try them out!
Why was working with a personal stylist a sustainable experience, you may ask?
- Order. You’ll end up with a calmer, more ordered wardrobe, where you can see and find everything.
- Learning experience. In these few hours I really developed a better understanding of my shape and color palette, which will result with less impulsive buying.
- New combo’s. Even though I didn’t buy anything new I feel like I have so many new exciting combinations to try out. It really helps to have someone look at your wardrobe with a fresh eye and objectivity.

I really did! Somehow, it’s lovely to just relax and let someone else have control… and when I relaxed and stopped needing to control everything – the results were very surprising!

Looks like you had a lot of fun! My fave combo is the silk dress (the one on the right with the belt – that looks lovely!)
