#30wears: 5 ways to wear a shirtdress
Sustainable fashion is more than eco-fabrics and new technologies; a big aspect of sustainability is combating overconsumption. Eco-fashion activist Livia Firth has attacked “throwaway fashion”, saying women buying new outfits should always ask: “Will I wear this 30 times?”. Since then the hashtag #30wears has been gaining popularity online and offline. I always try to get the most wear out of each new garment I bring home so I wanted to share with you my take on the 5 different ways to wear a shirtdress.
1. The shirtdress
I have a few shirtdresses in different colors and they are one of the most versatile items in my wardrobe. What I love about this particular Mila & James shirtdress is that it has a detachable bow, which gives even more options for different looks. If you have a shirtdress without a bow, you can simply recreate the look by tying up a silk scarf in a bow.

2. Belted shirtdress
Belts are all the rage now, especially wide corset-belts. You can really play with your look here and combine the classic shirtdress with a trendy wide belt. Or keep the look timeless with a thin one. Feeling adventurous? Why not try using a scarf or a necklace as a belt?

3. A dress over a shirtdress
This is one of my favorite looks out of 5 ways to wear a shirtdress. I love that this black dress is transparent enough to see the bottom of the shirtdress as well. This gives the whole outfit a layered, complex and at the same time a clean look.

4. Open shirtdress as a summer coat
I find this is such a simple way to keep cool in the summer. I burn easy and need to cover up sometimes. I also like to wear an open shirtdress to create a more layered look when it’s colder. This just shows you how versatile one shirtdress can be.

5. Mini-skirt over a shirtdress
This is another favorite way to wear a shirtdress and the most complicated one. The shirtdress has to stick out and be visible under the mini-skirt (that’s the whole point of this look, after all), but not too much, around 7 cm, otherwise the whole look will become too messy. The best way is just to experiment with all the mini-skirts you have and to find the right length for you.

I’m always looking for ways to extend my capsule wardrobe. I love the idea of using the shirt dress open as a light weight coat, I always struggle between seasons.

me too! But I also found that I was wearing it in the summer when I wanted to protect my shoulders and neck from being burned. Win-win!

Super cute looks! I love how many ways there are to style it!

Thank you, Neely! I was surprised as well when I started to think about the way to wear a shirtdress. I guess I never really spent time thinking about wearing one item in a different way. I get lazy sometimes and just wear clothes in the same way. It was a great way to challenge myself and get out of my “style rut”.
