Sustainable wardrobe tips: transition summer pieces into fall
The change of seasons is the most creative time in fashion. The mild temperatures not only allow you to wear your favourite summer clothes, but to pair them with a cosy autumn staples. This is good news for your sustainable wardrobe: fewer clothes/more combos.
Here are some of my favourite ways to transition summer pieces into fall:
1. Wear your summer skirts and dresses with tights and sweater
Don’t want to say goodbye to your favourite summer skirt or dress? You don’t have to: light, flowing delicate summer dresses and skirts look awesome combined with heavy sweaters, sporty sweatshirts or leather jackets. It’s this combination of fragile and rough fabrics that work so well.
I love to wear a long flowing skirt with a sweatshirt. I think it creates a fresh, new combination where elegance and sport create a bit of a tension.
If you wear a fuller skirt, make sure your top piece is not too bulky, otherwise the whole silhouette will become too square and unflattering.
Sustainable wardrobe tip: Go ahead and combine girly or glam accessories with sporty streetwear.
2. Wear summer dress over trousers
Easy-peasy: just wear a summer dress or skirt with skinny trousers/jeans for a most flattering look.

Want to experiment further: you can go for a 70’s feel with flared jeans or a long camisole and boyfriend jeans. Whenever you have time just match pants and dresses you have, practice makes perfect!

3. Or you can wear short sleeve dress over a sweater
You can experiment with wearing a long sleeve shirt, thin or thick sweater under a dress. Again, practice makes perfect here as well… Just set some time aside and try, try and try some more.
4. You can still go bare-legged…. Sometimes
Yes, you can! All you have to do is to wear something warm on top. A sweatshirt-dress, a warm sweater with skirt or shorts or leather jacket with a summer dress.
I’m sort of obsessed with streetwear at the moment.
Is it age appropriate? I’m not sure… Do I care? Absolutely not!
So not the most flattering combo… but so cosy. By combining the sweater dress and the skirt the whole shape became a bit long&rectangular. But I do like to play with the geometry of my outfits and, for me, the outfit doesn’t have to be “classically” attractive every time.
5. Shorts are not just for the summer
You can wear your shorts all the year around (hello sustainable wardrobe!), simply pair them with an opaque or woollen tights.
A bit of a military thing I’ve got going on here. The army shirt is the “real deal” Dutch male army shirt I picked at one of the clothes swapping parties.
Wearing a part of a real military outfit sometimes makes me wonder what this shirt and a man mearing it went through. That’s why I love vintage and second-hand clothes: I feel like they have a real history & some stories behind them.
6. Summer top on top
Yep, you’ve guessed it: you can wear your favourite summer top over long sleeve top or even a thin sweater. This is the most complex look, but go ahead and try, you might be surprised!

These are some great ideas! I’m definitely trying to expand my wardrobe without feeling like I need to buy new pieces so I’ll have to try some of these.

I love layering clothes, so these are great ideas. I definitely use tights and jackets to layer over dresses. I think that red sweatshirt dress is too cute! Looks comfy.
